A. urinae and A. sanguinicola most often causes UTI in elderly patients with a median age around 75 years and with a tendency to female predominance (5, 15, 28, 49, 54, 68). Acute pyelonephritis in a 12-year-old-boy has also been reported (45). Symptoms are the usual of urinary tract infections (dysuria, pyuria, and/or fever).

There is limited data regarding the susceptibility of A. urinae to first-line antimicrobials indicated for the treatment of UTIs. Bakteriesläktet Aerococcus består av åtta arter av s.k. Grampositiva kocker. Den första arten, A. viridans, beskrevs 1953 och kopplingar gjordes mellan den och en allvarlig sjukdom hos hummer. Det skulle dröja åtskilliga decennier innan nästa aerokockart, A. urinae, upptäcktes. Aerococcus urinae is currently more frequently identified since the introduction of MALDI-TOF MS technique in and showed an excess of males over females up to the age of 65 years. In young Of these, Aerococcus urinae was isolated in 10 (50%), Aerococcus viridans in 6 (30%), and Aerococcus spp.

Three cases of serious infection caused by Aerococcus urinae: A patient with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and two patients with bacteremia. 2019-09-19 · Aerococcus urinae (Au) and Globicatella sanguinis (Gs) are gram-positive bacteria belonging to the family Aerococcaceae and colonize the human immunocompromised and catheterized urinary tract. 2017-01-01 · Of the different species of aerococci, Aerococcus urinae is the most common agent causing UTI followed by A. sanguinocola. A. viridans has been reported rarely in UTI [ 2 , 10 , 11 ]. In India, till date in literature, A. viridans has been reported in a case of infective endocarditis [ 6 ]. Aerococcus urinae is a Gram-positive organism, initially identified in 1992.
The median age (range 35–95 years) of patients with this infection was 82.5 years for women and 77.5 for men. Men had significantly (p < 0.01) more local Introduction: Aerococcus urinae is a rare cause of infective endocarditis. The female urinary microbiome: a comparison of women with and without urgency These communities differ in women with and without lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), including UTI and urinary incontinence (UI).

A. urinae is a gram-positive coccus occurring in tetrads or pairs, similar to the α-hemolytic Streptococci, which is commonly found in the urinary tract in children and elderly people. Sex was almost equally distributed between men and women with aerococcal bacteriuria, whereas females dominated in E. coli bacteriuria.

Its genus was first described in 1953, with the first reported case of A. urinae in a human described in 1992 [ 1, 2 ]. Recent studies have estimated the incidence of Aerococcus in urine to be between 0.15 and 0.27% of cultures sent to the laboratory [2, 10, 11]. Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance .

Aerococcus genus was divided into Aerococcus viridans and A. urinae with the use of 16sRNA sequencing [3]. With improvements in microbiologic techniques and increased awareness of this entity there are now seven dis-tinct Aerococci species. Two of these species, Aerococcus urinaeequi and Aerococcus suis, have not been found to occur in humans. Bakterien har fått navnet Aerococcus urinae og er en alfahemolytisk (grønn) streptokokk. Bakterien er også beskrevet som årsak til septikemi og endokarditt (4, 5). Det er flere arter i samme gruppe med klinisk relevans.

Aerococcus urinae is increasingly recognized as a potentially significant urinary tract bacterium. A. urinae has been isolated from urine collected from both males and females with a wide range of clinical conditions, including urinary tract infection (UTI), urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), and overactive bladder (OAB).
